Are We Alone in the Universe?

As you may have noticed we've gone to an every other month schedule with this issue of the Journal. There just wasn't enough time in one month to get it done with grace and ease, which I find I value more and more as I get older.

Just in time, it seems, to work on an issue that was a bit like wandering through Alice's "rabbit hole"! Nothing like researching a subject such as UFOs, ETs and Crop circles to engender a sense of total non reality.  Nevertheless, it's time for an intelligent discussion of these topics and we want to do our part to bring them out of the "crazy" closet they have been tucked into for over half a century. Don't you think it's high time to seriously investigate it all, and work toward understanding what it can mean to us as humans? To have something so huge sitting in the midst of us like a great pink hippopotamus, and ignore it, no longer makes any sense.

We worked to weed out hoaxes and purposeful disinformation, and put together a collection of thought-provoking articles and videos to help you in this exploration.

Many of the authors in this months issue risked their careers and reputations to speak or write about UFOs, ETs and crop circles, and we are grateful for their intelligent efforts to make sense of these very sticky subjects.

We hope you enjoy this wander through "wonderland" and come away, as I did, with a more grounded sense of determination to get to the bottom of it all and an openness to exploring yet another frontier of human understanding.

UFOs & The Search
for Higher Consciousness

By John Warren White
Courtesy of the New Frontier website

For me, the most intriguing aspect of the UFO experience is the convergence of psychology and physics. As the study of inner space and outer space merges, consciousness--our own consciousness--becomes the key to understanding the situation. The UFO phenomenon simply leads us to still-larger questions. It is not enough to ask what they are, where they come from and what they want. Our ultimate questions concern cosmology and ontology: What is reality and how can we know it?

He has published 15 books, including The Meeting of Science and Spirit, What Is Enlightenment?, A Practical Guide to Death and Dying and, for children, The Christmas Mice. Crop Circle by Bert Janssen

-- by Tom Carney

Big scientific question: Is there life in the universe other than what we have on planet Earth? Or, are we alone in Universe?.....

.....I have no doubt that we will, sooner rather than later, discover a planet somewhere in that vastness we call Cosmos that supports what we have arbitrarily decided is Life. But that is not really the problem. The problem here is that the Big Scientific Question "Is there Life in the Universe?" is actually based on an assumption that is an error.

The error is the assumption that equates Life with dense physical form existence.....

An interesting discussion of the UFO taboo in the scientific, academic, political and military communities, as well as the general population.

"...if academics' first responsibility is to tell the truth, then the truth is that after sixty years of modern UFOs, human beings still have no idea what they are, and are not even trying to find out. "UFOs have never been systematically investigated by science or the state, because it is assumed to be known that none are extraterrestrial. Yet in fact this is not known, which makes the UFO taboo puzzling given the ET possibility..."

Skeptic - One who practices the method of suspended judgment, engages in rational and dispassionate reasoning as exemplified by the scientific method, shows willingness to consider alternative explanations without prejudice based on prior beliefs, and who seeks out evidence and carefully scrutinizes its validity.
Bernard Haisch -

I propose that true skepticism is called for today: neither the gullible acceptance of true belief nor the closed-minded rejection of the scoffer masquerading as the skeptic. One should be skeptical of both the believers and the scoffers. The negative claims of pseudo-skeptics who offer facile explanations must themselves be subject to criticism.....

.....Any scientist who has not read a few serious books and articles presenting actual UFO evidence should out of intellectual honesty refrain from making scientific pronouncements. To look at the evidence and go away unconvinced is one thing. To not look at the evidence and be convinced against it nonetheless is another. That is not science. Do your homework! is worth keeping in mind something Winston Churchill once said on that topic: "Men occasionally stumble over the truth, but most pick themselves up and hurry off as if nothing had happened."

.....Despite the UFO phenomenon having continued now for over two generations, the huge technological head start of the presumed ETs would still come as a great shock to many scientists as well as citizenry, as the Brookings Report indicated. It could be so great as to seriously challenge our consensual reality, a not insignificant danger. The implication that we would be powerless relative to their presumed capabilities and evolutionary advantage may be most un-welcome, with it being no surprise that science would have difficulty coming to terms with the situation. Nevertheless, the reality of the phenomenon and of our having long since been discovered by advanced ETs now may be more probable than that Fermi’s paradox is to be resolved through either the non-existence of advanced ETs or their inability to explore or colonise the galaxy. Hence open scientific research on the subject is needed with special attention paid to high quality UFO reports exhibiting apparent indications that ET intelligence and strategy are involved.....

Best Evidence: Top ten UFO sightings

Here is a short Skylab segment of the 2008 movie "Best Evidence: Top ten UFO sightings" by Canadian film-maker Paul Kimball, which looks into 10 compelling UFO incidents, as voted by UFO researchers. Unexplained sightings by NASA astronauts seem to be particularly popular among the general public. Most people have watched US astronaut Buzz Aldrin talk about the "UFO" which the Apollo 11 crew saw on their way to the Moon. To UFO researchers however, the most compelling UFO case involving US astronauts in space, is the Skylab 1973 case:

Fermi's Paradox and the Preparation
for Contact Hypothesis

by Bernard Haisch

...Carl Sagan once said: "There may be a million worlds in the Milky Way Galaxy alone which are at this moment inhabited by other intelligent beings" (Cosmos, episode XI).

If that is the case, one can draw the conclusion statistically that unless civilizations tend to extinguish themselves once they discover sufficient technology to do so, most alien civilizations would be older and more technologically advanced than we are.....

.....The bottom line is that if even only a few alien civilizations have arisen in the 10 billion or so year history of our Galaxy, most of the habitable parts of the Galaxy would likely be colonized by now.

The famous physicist, Enrico Fermi, was referring to such an argument when he asked: "Where are they?" Since he was a prominent (and very smart) scientist, his simple question has been given a duly profound name: Fermi's paradox. The paradox is resolved, of course, if the answer is: "Well, they are already here!" (and possibly have been for a very long time and perhaps have even been involved in the rather sudden emergence of homo sapiens sapiens, but that may be over the top, so ignore that last conjecture if it is too much, though I seem to recall that even Sagan considered that possibility at some point). Their being here -- but surreptitiously -- would answer Fermi and at the same time address a second common objection to the UFO phenomenon by scientists: that the observations indicate such utterly nonsensical, bizarre behaviour that it just could not possibly be real. Intelligent visitors just would not pull such disreputable antics as have been reported.....

The Rifles Spiral by Courtney Autumn

‘‘Seeing is Believing: The Truth about UFOs’’
by Peter Jennings, ABC-TV, February 24, 2005.

by Bernard Haisch

The pre-show publicity for this two-hour program was remarkable: a full page ad in Newsweek, and presumably elsewhere, claiming that ‘‘the reporting on UFOs finally gets serious.’’ I knew they had ample material to draw from. One of the producers told me that about 200 hours of footage, including some of me, did not make the final cut. Thus, there were good reasons to expect something reasonably significant, perhaps the possibility that the program might break the long mainstream media taboo on serious treatment of the topic. Whether or not that was accomplished will take some time to determine. Certainly there has been no immediate consequence of this sort.

In the weeks following the airing of this documentary, I read enough criticisms, mostly justified in their own context, to make me reconsider my own initial impression that the show had been ‘‘pretty good,’’ a cut above the usual treatment on the cable channels. It was only when I played the show back four weeks later, with the luxury of stopping and taking notes, that I found my initial impression had been correct....

Definitive acknowledgement has been made by scientists and even politicians for decades.  Why is it still not common knowledge?  Perhaps this paragraph from a memo from the CIA (Robert Gates – 18 November 1991) gives a clue.

“PAO (public affairs office) now has relationships with reporters from every major wire service, newspaper, news weekly and television network in the nation. This has helped us turn some “intelligence failure” stories into “intelligence success” stories and it has contributed to the accuracy of countless others. In many instances, we have persuaded reporters to postpone, change, hold or even scrap stories that could have adversely affected national security interests or jeopardized sources and methods.”

Extraterrestrial Visitation:
Some Thoughts on Keeping It Secret

by Bernard Haisch from

The U.S. government secretly hired hundreds of private companies during the 1940s and '50s to process huge volumes of nuclear weapons material, leaving a legacy of poisoned workers and contaminated communities that lingers to this day. From mom-and-pop machine shops to big-name chemical firms, private manufacturing facilities across the nation were quietly converted to the risky business of handling tons of uranium, thorium, polonium, beryllium and other radioactive and toxic substances. Few of the contractors were prepared for the hazards of their government-sponsored missions. Thousands of workers were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation, often hundreds of times stronger than the limits of the time. Dozens of communities were contaminated, their air, ground and water fouled by toxic and radioactive waste. The risks were kept hidden. In some cases, they have remained so."

So began a lengthy expose revealing a major government secret that involved thousands of individuals. It was published in USA Today on September 6, 2000. The truth had been successfully kept secret for 50 years. If the reality of the UFO phenomenon were known within one or more deep black special access programs, why might it too be kept a secret from the public? This question was posed to a well placed, highly educated, former intelligence officer who at several points in his long career with one of the agencies had been briefed and asked to assist in evaluation of certain UFO material. I obtained his reply through an intermediary....

Wanderlust by Courtney Autumn

"The implications of a UFO reality and cover-up are profound. It means that our society has lived in an “official” reality so incomplete, so inaccurate, that we may with justice call it fictitious. It means that the history we have learned, the science we think we know, and the very core of who we think we are, need to be rediscovered."

The Problem

Across the Earth’s skies and deep within the minds of humankind, UFOs are everywhere and nowhere. For years, decades, generations, and centuries, people have noticed unusual and occasionally impossible things in their skies. It will never be known how many sightings occurred in early times; today they are daily and worldwide. And yet, except for brief punctuations, the main instruments of power in our world continue to remain silent. The discrepancy between humanity’s collective eyes and its voice is striking and unsettling.

There is scarcely a person on Earth who has not heard of UFOs; many believe in them. Few, however, can say much about them. Fewer still – even believers – can find much time to think about them. Life finds a way of keeping us occupied with other matters.

Simply put, the phenomenon is a bundle of contradictions. But if UFOs could be shown to be genuine, anomalous, and apparently the result of some intelligence other than that of our official and current civilization, then surely that would be something. Something so big, so shattering, that all other truths might well be humbled by it....

Disclosure and Transformation:
Why Disclosure of the UFO/ET Subject Matters

Steven M. Greer M.D.

Amid the clamor of a world hurtling towards the next century, a great secret has been kept from humanity which may hold the key to our future. This secret is hidden in plain sight and yet remains unacknowledged by most. It is discussed widely in popular culture - but its import and meaning remain elusive.

In a world swimming in new high-tech billionaires and Internet moguls, we yet use a basic infrastructure - combustible fuels - which is a holdover from the 1800s. And it threatens all that we are and all that we can be as it incinerates our future in a sea of pollution, in a world of increasing haves and have nots.

In a world where the richest 250 people have the wealth of half of the world's population and where our current direction can only lead to some eventual termination in a great grey cloud of smoke, what does it matter that we are not alone in the universe - and have been visited already?

Indeed. What does it matter?.....

.....I awakened this morning thinking of these and many other things....

UFOs and God-Realization

by John White

The relationship of UFOs to religious beliefs is an ambivalent one. Some people deny its significance; others give it central importance. In my opinion, both views are wrong. UFOs are neither central nor irrelevant to religion; they are simply subordinate, less than ultimate.

Let’s first examine the notion that they are of no significance. Suppose the ancient astronaut hypothesis of Erich von Däniken and others is someday confirmed beyond dispute. Suppose it is proven conclusively that one or more extraterrestrial civilizations interacted with people early in human history, appearing to be “gods from outer space.” People today whose religious beliefs are origin-oriented or person-centered would not welcome the confirmation. In fact, their beliefs would be shaken to the very foundations.....

Crop Circles - What are they?

Crop circles are areas of plants flattened (usually) into recognizable designs--most often found in fields of growing cereal crops (wheat, barley, oats, rye, etc.). They also occur in corn (maize), grasses, reeds and all sorts of vegetables, and sometimes--according to the scientific plant data available--these more randomly-downed (no discernible pattern) areas contain the same plant abnormalities as have been documented in genuine "geometric" formations. Crop circles are occurring, as best we can tell, all over the world, with the modern "flap" having been first noted in England in the 1970s--and there is documentation indicating they occurred and were reported as early as the 17th century.

Although some modern crop formations are known to have been mechanically-flattened by people, scientific research published by the BLT Research Team in the 1990s has established plant & soil abnormalities which cannot be caused by "pranks with planks".

An Introduction to Crop Circles

by Freddy Silva

Crop circles are scientifically proven to be manifestations of energy under intelligent guidance. Over 80 eyewitnesses since 1890 describe them to be made by tubes of light in less than fifteen seconds.....

.....Contrary to popular perception, crop circles are not a modern phenomenon. They were witnessed by policemen and farmers as far back as 1890, they exist in the folklore of South Africa and China, and are mentioned in 17th Century academic texts. Around 1980 they re-appeared as simple circles and rings in southern England, where 75% of designs are reported. By the late 1980s they developed into pictograms, not unlike the petroglyphs found at sacred sites. After 1990 the designs developed exponentially in complexity, and today the crop circles display as fractals and elements expressing fourth dimensional processes in quantum physics.

To quell the public’s growing interest in crop circles, the British Secret Service MI5 presented two individuals named Doug and Dave to the media, via a fictitious press agency, as the makers of all crop circles. The majority of their claims were later proved to have been fabricated but never reported in the media. So, what exactly lies behind real crop circles?.....

The Friendship

I know this funny little film is not about UFOs, ETs or crop circles, but it seems easy to just extend it's message a wee bit to include whoever might inhabit the rest of the Universe!

The term "singularity" describes the moment when a civilization changes so much that its rules and technologies are incomprehensible to previous generations. Think of it as a point-of-no-return in history.

One Universe, One People

Copyright 1991 Steven M. Greer, M.D.

One of the greatest tasks humanity has faced throughout history is the establishment of peace and unity among differing and diverse peoples. Superficial, external and cultural distinctions such as gender, race, ethnic origin, nationality, religion and so forth have long divided humanity and been the cause of much warfare and social turmoil. It is only in the last 100 or so years that humans have seriously begun to explore worldwide our points of unity and begun to overcome the barriers which have separated humanity. Central to this evolutionary process has been the dynamic of at once accepting and celebrating diversity while simultaneously seeing the fundamental oneness which all humans share. This dynamic of unity - seeing with the eye of oneness - is the essential foundation for lasting world peace and prosperity, and will be the motivating principle of the next millennium. The long and painful process of overcoming prejudice and embracing humanity's essential oneness, while by no means yet complete, has brought us to the dawn of a true world-encircling community of one people. The recognition that mankind is one, that race, nationality, gender, religion and so on are secondary to our shared humanness, may well be the crowning achievement of the 20th century.

But what does it mean to be human, essentially human, apart from a purely biological definition? Our deepest point of unity transcends race, culture, gender, profession, life roles, even level of intelligence or emotional make- up, since all these attributes vary widely among people. Rather, the foundation of human oneness is consciousness itself, the ability to be conscious, self-aware, intelligent sentient beings. All other human qualities arise from this mother of all attributes. Conscious intelligence is the root essence from which all other human qualities emanate. It is the universal and fundamentally pure canvas on which the dazzling array of human life manifests. The firmest, most enduring and transcendent foundation on which human unity is based then, is consciousness itself, for we are all sentient beings, conscious, self-aware, and intelligent. No matter how diverse two people or two cultures may be, this foundation of consciousness will enable unity to prevail, as it is the simplest yet most profound common ground which all humans share.

As great as the challenges to unity have been and continue to be for humans, how much greater might this be for the emerging and embryonic relationship between humans and extraterrestrial civilizations. The superficial and cultural differences between, say, an American and a Kenyan tribesman may pale before it! If disunity and conflict arise when we look only to the differences between humans, how much greater will the potential disunity and conflict be if we are able only to focus on the points of difference between humans and extraterrestrial beings. The failed and disastrous ways of the past - of seeing only differences and foreign qualities - must give way to a new way of seeing, of seeing with the eye of oneness. This eye of oneness must be directed not only towards our fellow humans, but towards extraterrestrial people as well, for the same fundamental basis for unity which exists among humans also exists for the relationship between humans and extraterrestrials.....
