Carney What can we do? I am sure that all of the people on the planet who think of themselves... as servers of humanity, that are at least concerned about the welfare of their neighbors and the planet ask this question of themselves often. I know I do. The answer I have been getting lately is “Meditate, that’s what you know how to do.” So, I spend a lot of my time meditating and thinking about this planet, Earth, this little ball of dirt spinning around in what certainly appears to be an infinite universe. I meditate and think even more about humanity, about the wonder of humanity, about its role, and place and function on this planet, and the fact that I can actually sit here and do this.
I admit it. A lot of the time I am stunned into an awed silence. I think I know what John Keats was talking about when he wrote On First Looking Into Chapman’s Homer,
The Universe, Infinity, these are ineffable concepts, at which we can only gaze and about which we can only mutter. And this planet, this little tiny ball of atoms and electrical connections, what can possibly be said in our language about the grandeur of our planet that would even come close to expressing what it is? Well, nothing, or not much, by me anyway. All of the greatest poets have forever been trying to reveal the hidden wonder. They try to write poems to reveal Being. They resort to metaphor. Occasionally someone comes close, but the essential truth is never quite touched.
It is, we all agree an incredible place. As all of us do, I love the planet. Anyone who thinks, even a little bit, has to be just amazed at what is going on here. The more deeply one thinks the more amazed one becomes.
So, I think and meditate about infinity and nothing. I ponder a lot on the current physical- dense situation too, and the role humanity plays in this scheme. I stay in touch. I read and listen. I keep grounded.
So that I may in someway affect the course of events, I try to turn my thinking into practical, even useful thoughtforms that other people can touch and use. Remember, friends, this is unquestionably an interconnected reality about which we are talking, so the notion that one micro meditator building thoughtforms of beauty and power can affect the macro course of events is not as improbable as most people assume. In fact this is the only mechanism that exists that does affect the course of the unfolding Plan.
Because I engage in this work, I think that I need to be at least as well informed about what is actually going on as I am about the possibilities of what could and eventually will be. Consequently, I know a little about the current of events here and there in God’s garden, and, I have to say, the little that I actually know about what’s happening on the planet also stuns me. Friends, let me tell you, the situation on planet Earth is—to use some very nicey, nicey language—not that great.
There are a lot of really wonderful things happening. I know that. However, I think that any rational observer would be upset, even a bit frightened at the unfolding prospects. It’s really pretty bad. I am very concerned and not a little disappointed and discouraged, even if just for a moment.
So, what I see when I take a good look at the physical-dense stuns me, but not actually into silence. When confronted with situations like this—after he gets control of the disappointment and so forth—a meditator tends to act. Usually, at least in my case, out comes the pen. (First Ray disciples learned a long time ago that the pen actually is mightier than the sword.) Because I love and understand the planet, when I see something wrong, I am compelled, literally driven, to try to fix it, or at the very least call attention to it. I simply can’t not do something.
So, I spend even more of my time writing and talking. What I am writing and talking about these days is the reality of the near disaster we have on our hands. I get feedback about what I write and talk about, and some of the feedback I get is advice about not being what is called “negative.”
Apparently, to some folks, talking about what is actually happening is being negative. “It frightens people.” I’m told, “Makes them uncomfortable.” I should be writing/speaking about the good news and not be energizing the shadow by talking about it. It’s like one can’t say Voldermort.
Well, maybe people should be frightened. Frankly, I’m scared half to death by the likes of “Home Security” and so forth. Or consider this paragraph from Glorious Appearing, the most recent novel in the worldwide best seller (60 million copies) Left Behind series.
In the narrative, Jesus has returned to Earth to clean up the planet, to sort of recycle all of the non-Christians whom he has sorted out into a group on His left hand. Then, the story goes, "Jesus merely raised one hand a few inches and a yawning chasm opened in the earth, stretching far and wide enough to swallow all of them. They tumbled in, howling and screeching, but their wailing was soon quashed and all was silent when the earth closed itself again."
You understand, friends, that probably most of the people who read Thoughtline and things like it, would not make the cut here. We would be joining those howling and screeching folks in the chasm. The folks who subscribe to this kind of thinking are very serious; there is a very large number of them, and, friends, that is scary.
I suppose that I would feel more comfortable with the “don’t be negative” comments if we lived in a true democracy, and rational, loving people were in charge of more of the governments of the world, or at least the government of the United States of America, our government.
The fact is, however, that this is not the case. There are plenty of folks in other parts of the world who are just as rabid about cleaning up the situation from their point of view as are the local fundamentalists. This particular vein of fanaticism often goes by the name of “ethnic cleansing”, and the fact is, we would not make the cut for them either.
Meanwhile, here in the USA, we are coming perilously close to losing the democracy we do have. Although it is comforting and easy to blame the situation on the current political administration, in actuality, our current governmental crisis is a direct result of our lack of vigilance. You know the phrase. “The price of liberty is eternal vigilance.” Rather than eternal vigilance, we have the un-ending marketing of complacency. We have over-whelming self indulgence in material comforts and inane, mind numbing entertainments, sports contests and banal television programs.
The majority of the “thinking-capable” people on the planet are totally focused in the pursuit of material goods and the immediate gratification of the most trivial kinds of personality desire. Shopping is a national pastime. It has literally become a new sport. People are classed according to the amount of money they spend shopping in one day. Thus we have the $10,000 a day shoppers or $40,000 a day shoppers. Madonna is reported to spend about $250,000 a year for clothes. The wife of a former energy company CEO demanded a $15,000 a month jewelry allowance in their divorce settlement.
Consuming inordinate amounts of material things is not just a pastime for the wealthy. People of all but the poorest levels of the class system which exists in the United States and other so called developed countries around the world—including members of the rapidly disappearing “middle class”—in their efforts to emulate what is obviously the “good life,” actually take vacations at a place called the Mall of America.
The Mall of America is a vacation resort which claims to attract more annual visitors than Disneyland, Graceland and the Grand Canyon combined! The Mall of America home page on the internet says, “Mall of America will make your head spin: more than 520 stores, a seven-acre amusement park, a walk-through aquarium, an entire level of restaurants and bars, a 15-screen movie theater. Other family attractions include Camp Snoopy, the nation’s largest fully enclosed theme park, spanning seven acres and featuring 28 rides and attractions….”
Consuming the edible and drinkable trophies of sport shopping has created an epidemic of obesity.
And then, born of our total denial of what is really going on in the world, we have our persistent affected ignorance. “I mean, with my car and SUV and our house and timeshare condos, my 50 pairs of shoes… those are summer shoes… three sets of golf clubs, skis, kayaks, scuba gear, guns, fishing rods, and oh yeah my boat, did I mention my boat, anyway with all this stuff, what could possibly be wrong?”
Everyone knows that the root of denial is a deep seated fear of what one sub-consciously knows. We tremble at the thought of what admitting our secret knowledge to ourselves may cause us to do, or to become responsible for. We really do not want to disturb our comfortable existences, so we deny or ignore the approaching precipice. You know friends, the movie, Day After Tomorrow, was really an apt metaphor for what we are facing. It may not be an ice age with ice, but life without freedom looks pretty cold.
The facts are that we have, over the past 30 years or so squandered two hundred years of hard and bloodily won progress on a social contract whose noble goal was to provide the greatest good possible for everyone. We had developed numerous social systems to implement this goal. All of these systems had/have problems, but all of them were/are steps in the right direction. Based on the vision of liberty and justice for all, of a government of, for and by the people, we were moving into a greater light than any that had previously been seen on the physical-dense plane of life.
We had systems in place that actually tried to assure that no child, not only would not be left behind, but would not go to bed hungry or to school both hungry and without shoes. We had eliminated overt slavery. We made labor laws that would protect workers and children from the kinds of abuses they had suffered through as slaves, surfs, peons and non-property holders. We made it possible for women to vote.
We created a medical system that actually tried to assure that no older person would have to eat cat food so that he or she could afford to have at least half of the medication that was needed. We guaranteed a decent education to every child through the 12th grade, and then we were actually providing our children with the wherewithal to go to college.
People could actually buy a home and a car, and most of us had jobs. For those who did not have actual jobs, we had inclusive socially responsible programs. Although under daily attack, some of those programs like UIB (Unemployment Insurance Benefits), AFDC (Aid To Families With Dependent Children) Food Stamps, Medicare and Social Security still exist. These programs were/are far from perfect, but they were/are steps in the right direction. Government was interested in building infrastructure rather than armies, in preserving and making public parks and national monuments, rather than destroying them or turning them in to exclusive playgrounds for the mega rich.
Well enough from me. If what has gone down above has made some individuals uncomfortable or even frightened, maybe that’s good. Let us remember, we are “the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Free and brave people are not cowards. They did not become free and brave by running from fear or by denying it. They do not respond to terrorism by becoming terrorized. They also do not try to obliterate it with massive force.
Free people, brave people are also generally understanding people. They try to understand what generates the danger. Based on their understanding rather than their fear, they will respond cautiously, and with respect for the danger, taking intelligent steps to neutralize it.
Rather than fear and hate or a desire for revenge, a desire to get even, the above course of action is driven by intelligent goodwill, by understanding and love. So, if we can get motivated enough, if we can love enough to do something about the situation in which we find ourselves and the world community, that’s great.
Notice, I did not say if we can get mad enough or angry enough. The answer my friends, is definitely not in getting mad or angry, and it is also definitely not “blowing in the wind.” The answer is trying to bloom in our hearts. It’s called love, and if we love enough we can find the courage and the wisdom to do anything, even get our country back on track.
Many disciples are aware of the situation, and many are loving enough to try to do something about it. If you are not a part of that vanguard of the citizens of the New World Order, the opportunity to become a part is there, the need is great, and, as the Beatles, one of the earliest group avatars of the Aquarian Age said, all anyone really needs in our joint effort to bring in the Light and Love of the Christ is love.
