Tobias Doering, FU

"Sights/Sites
of Creativity and Conflict: African Cultures, Visual Arts, and the Museum"
The Journal
MATATU is planning a special issue on "African Cultures, Visual Arts, and
the Museum", to be published in June 2002 to coincide with the opening of
documenta XI. This major international art exhibition is being curated by
Okwui Enwezor, who was born in Nigeria and has worked in the US, South Africa,
and elsewhere. His profound vision of contemporary art as a frictional and
transformative force in the conflicts of globalization and modernization
promises to enable challenging African creative interventions in this project
and calls for critical responses.
MATATU invites
critical essays, interviews, portraits, poems, exhibition reviews and
phtotographs that address these issues. We are particularly interested in
contributions that concern creative media cross-overs and the transgression of
familiar boundaries.
Please send a
detailed abstract or description (ca 500 words) to:

Women's World Summit Foundation
presents
Winter School of Ecofeminism
an international programme on women's empowerment, spirituality and
a culture of peace.
Ecofeminism today is emerging globally as a major catalyst of
ethical, social, political, and creative change. Ecofeminism is a
convergence of three major contemporary movements: cultural feminism,
environmentalism and women's spirituality.
The fundamental thesis of ecofeminism is that the domination of nature
and the oppression of women come from the same root cause.
The Winter School of Ecofeminism,
based at the Findhorn Foundation's Ecovillage Project, is in 5
separate modules, which may be attended as a whole or separately.

"I
know of no restorative of heart, body, and soul more effective
against hopelessness than the restoration of the Earth."
Barry Lopez
“The wounds we have inflicted on the Earth can be healed ... but
if it is to be done, it must be done now. Otherwise, it may never
be done at all.”
Jonathan Porritt - Save the Earth
Easter Conference for the healing of our planet's ecosystems
“Our greatest challenge is to begin the awesome task of healing
the Earth and transforming human consciousness while there is
still time.” Dr. Michael Fox.
OUR PLANET is in crisis and cries for our attention. This
week-long conference Restore the Earth! offers you an opportunity
to respond.
Earth’s ability to sustain life, both human and that of more
than five million other species, is being seriously reduced. The
rate of species extinctions is now estimated at 150 per day.
Ecosystems everywhere are being fragmented, depleted and
destroyed. Pollution of the soil, water and air is increasing
exponentially, and human-induced climate change is a reality.
Despite the efforts of many organisations, institutions and
individuals, large parts of the planetary ecosystem are dying.
Human participation in this death of life has never been more
evident.

Biotechnology, Agriculture, and
Racism
January 4 - 8th, 2002
Genetically
engineered crops have raised widespread controversy throughout the
industrialized world due to growing evidence of serious environmental, public
health, and socio-economic consequences. Critics in the global South, however,
have raised many of the most pointed and systemic critiques of the technology
as a whole. While the biotechnology industry's $50 million per year
advertising campaign paints this technology as the savior of the world's
hungry masses, activists and critics throughout the world have argued that
this is very far from the case.

THE ROOTS OF LEARNING: SCHOOLS, LAND
AND FOOD
Prue Leith, Learning through Landscapes, Sue
Clifford & Mary Tasker March 23-28,
2002
It is vital that the citizens of the future learn to understand and
cherish their environment, be it urban or rural. An ecological world view needs
to be integrated into the way a school operates, and this requires more than the
occasional lesson in "environmental education". This course provides educationalists with
inspiration and practical ideas about how to carry forward changes to the
curriculum, and provides a forum for discussing the educational significance of
such innovations.

May 17-19, 2002
At the Renaissance Austin Hotel
The theme of our 2002 conference series is happiness—happiness of mind,
heart, body, and soul. Through keynote talks, workshops, and full-day
intensives, some of the nation's best-selling authors, teachers, and
spiritual leaders explore questions of the heart: What makes you really
happy? How can happiness be found and sustained in the complexity and stress
of daily life? How can your own joy contribute to the healing of your
relationships and the world in which you live? How do you live deeply
everyday rather than merely exist through your days? Come join us as we
explore together the heart of happiness.

Theosophical Quest
Frodo, a Hobbit from the Shire of Middle-earth,

themselves, but for the welfare of the world. This Theosophical application of
the Harry Potter books and The Lord of the Rings follows the
adventures of both Frodo and Harry as they discover who they are and what their
dharma is. It shows that these two protagonists are really us, and their
discoveries are ours.

Inseeing: Art as Transformation
Thousands of years ago we were told by the
oracle of Delphi to know ourselves. Investigating this injunction from different
viewpoints, we see its depth and why it is so challenging a task. Works of art
can stimulate the process of self-knowing and self-transformation. Tom Ockerse,
MFA, is a professor of graphic design at the Rhode Island School of Design with
30 years of experience. He is currently a Director of the Theosophical Society
in America and on the board of the Pumpkin Hollow Theosophical Camp.

Discovering the Secrets in the Akashic Records
Find out about the akashic records, what they
are, and how they affect our lives. H. P. Blavatsky, a key founder of the
Theosophical Society, said that Akasha is the "Soul of the Universe,"
the recorder and evoker of our karmic predicament. We will explore this
mysterious reality and learn about its implications in the ordinary world.

International Conference on Cultural Exchange and
Transformation in the Indian Ocean World
An Indian Ocean World (IOW) linking eastern Africa from the Cape to the
Horn, islands of the Indian Ocean, lands of the Indian Ocean Rim from the Red
Sea, southern Arabia and the Gulf, and on to South Asia and western Indonesia,
has existed for millennia; yet it remains curiously understudied in the West,
perhaps because it is one of the most culturally and historically complex
regions in the world. While considerable research has been conducted within
different disciplines and continental sub-regions on such topics as the
history of trade throughout the IOW, the rise of Islam, and material culture
associated with these phenomena, we still know very little about cultural
elements crossing borders and uniting the region. Yet we know that there have
been major cultural exchanges across its waters and around its littoral that
date back at least to the beginning of the current era and that these were
greatly accelerated following the rise of Islam in the seventh century CE. In
our conference we propose to investigate the IOWor perhaps IOWs, as defined
from differing perspectives and time framesby focusing on the exchange and
reformulation of ideas that have shaped the development of popular culture
with a focus upon diasporic communities in general, and that of African
descent more specifically. We propose to explore the complex issues involved
in cultural transactions throughout the IOW over the course of this long
period of time by inviting scholars whose research combines a historical
approach with the methodologies and insights of anthropology, art history,
ethnomusicology, linguistics, comparative literature, and other fields. Our
goals are to expose the richness of the multidirectional sources of cultural
exchange throughout the IOW by breaking down traditional academic barriers
that have been imposed by prevailing disciplinary and area studies paradigms.

The year 2002 has been declared the
"International Year of Ecotourism" by the United Nations. Resolution
53/200 mandates the United Nations Environmental Program and the World
Tourism Organization to organize a number of events and activities around the
International Year of Ecotourism
International Year of
Ecotourism 2002
The United Nations
General Assembly has designated 2002 as the International Year of Ecotourism (IYE).
The IYE offers an opportunity to review ecotourism experiences worldwide, in
order to consolidate tools and institutional frameworks that ensure its
sustainable development in the future. This means maximizing the economic,
environmental and social benefits from ecotourism, while avoiding its past
shortcomings and negative impacts.
OBJECTIVES
The activities
around the International Year of Ecotourism have the following goals:
-
Generate
greater awareness among public authorities, the private sector, the civil
society and consumers regarding ecotourism's capacity to contribute to the
conservation of the natural and cultural heritage in natural and rural
areas, and the improvement of living standards in those areas;
-
Disseminate
methods and techniques for the planning, management, regulation and
monitoring of ecotourism to guarantee its long-term sustainability; and
-
Promote
exchanges of experiences in the field of ecotourism.

How might media coverage be influencing humanitarian assistance to
people involved in civil conflicts, like Kosovo? Unicef raised funds for
assistance in Kosovo in just a few weeks, but funding for emergencies in 22
other countries are still only 15% of the goal. Join young people worldwide in a
discussion about the world's less reported conflicts.
