A Sense of Justice – recognition of the rights and needs of all

A Spirit of Co-operation – based on active goodwill and the principle of right human relationships

A Sense of Personal Responsibility – for group, community and national affairs

Serving the Common Good – through the sacrifice of selfishness. Only what is good for all is good for each one

Hope Magazine  March/April 2002 Issue

From an article about Patch Adams

(Patch)Adams's intention is to create a caring world, and so he practices "universal friendliness," greeting all who cross his path, engaging strangers in conversation, and publicly celebrating life, with all of its imperfections. He encourages others to join him: It's "a direct confrontation of evil and boredom and all of the problems of society. Anyone can do it; you can do it today, and you can do it tomorrow; you can do it if you're in prison or have AIDS.... The goal is to fall in love with humanity," he says.

A list by Patch Adams

 TEN QUESTIONS TO PONDER
  • If no one wants to end up in a nursing home, what kind of community can celebrate all ages together and honor elders?

  • Could you choose at least one child you're not related to and help give that child the time and care s/he needs?

  • If compassion and generosity were the measure of success that money and power now are, how would your life change?

  • To bond your neighborhood in healthy interdependence, would you host weekly potlucks?

  • If being publicly joyful, even silly, were beneficial for our society, would you participate?

  • If you have rooms at your home, why not take in single parents as a gift?

  • How can we move to an economics of friendship?

  • Could you volunteer ten or more hours each week to make a healthier world?

  • Do you dare to be universally friendly to end violence?

  • Can you match the cost of everything you buy with a donation to an environmental sustainability project?

 TEN THINGS ANYONE CAN DO
  • Pick up all the trash in an area in your hometown;
be its guardian. Tell others about it.

  • Be friendly to everyone at all times; experiment outrageously.

  • Offer a shoulder or foot rub in any environment.

  • Always speak up for justice, no matter how much it costs.

  • Go once a week to nursing homes to cheer people up as a friend.

  • Turn off your TV and become interesting. Perform yourself.

  • Consider being silly in public. Sing out loud.
    Wear funny stuff.

  • Find ways to need a whole lot less money; share beyond belief.

  • Have potlucks frequently, with neighbors, coworkers, strangers. Work toward living in extended families.

  • Take vacations in your own town and spend the money working on projects there that help build community.

"The world is my country, all mankind my brethren,
and to do good is my religion."

Thomas Paine (1737-1809)

A FORMULA FOR WORLD PEACE AND PROGRESS

An affirmation by men and women of goodwill around the world

Men and women of goodwill in their millions, convinced

• that there is potential for good in all mankind

• that the human family can live together in right relations and at peace

• that right relationship between peoples and nations is the key to unity and peace

• that practical goodwill is the key to right relationships

• that the energy of goodwill is the active principle of peace, justice and progress for all humanity;

Affirm their intention

• to practice goodwill in all relationships, in all daily affairs and in all attitudes and actions towards those of other nations, races, religions and social backgrounds

• to support and co-operate with those in positions of influence and responsibility who use goodwill and reason instead of force and coercion

• to encourage, publicize and work for the adoption of goodwill-in-action by local and national groups and institutions.

Enough men and women of goodwill accepting responsibility for the establishing of right relationships among people and between nations, and working actively with the principles of unity and goodwill, guarantee a future of peace and progress for the whole human race.

"Racism in its many forms is one of the chief barriers to individual fulfillment and happiness in our own society, and a major component in wars, persecutions, and ongoing slavery elsewhere in the world. I hope that people will finally come to realize that there is only one 'race'--the human race--and that we are all members of it," Margaret Atwood

May the Power of the one Life
